HOW TO CORRECTLY MEASURE AND HANG WALLAPPER
The most crucial step is the preparation of the walls before you
wallpaper. The walls need to be smooth and clean for a successful
wallpaper session. The correct way for preparing surfaces for different
type is as follows:
When you surface has been previously Wallpapered then start
by removing old wallpaper but you don't need to if wallpaper is
in good condition. Do this by grabbing an edge and pulling.
If the wall has been Painted previously then you need to
clean the area then remove bumps and marks on the wall. Fill in
the cracks and then smooth to a finish. Lastly prime the area before
you size the wallpaper.
When preparing to wallpaper Glossy Painted surfaces then
after washing carefully sand to smooth perfection.
If the surface is New and Unpainted then you prepare to wallpaper
by firstly applying a primer or sealer. Cover cracks with wallpaper
lining and continue to size the wall.
Additional advice: If planning to paint a surface do this
before wallpapering. Buy extra wallpaper for areas that may
become damaged.
How to cut and measure the wallpaper
Record the height in several places around the room by measuring
from ceiling line to baseboard. The wall may be higher in some areas
and take note of longest height. Then add an additional 4 inches
to that height. This helps with trimming walls. Cut the first strip
of wallpaper using this measurement and then all other strips.
Make sure to check the pattern at ceiling before you cut the strip.
Mark strip where baseboard and ceiling meet. Use a clean, flat surface
for cutting the wallpaper.
The second strip needs to match up with the first strip. Mark the
strips with T for Top on the back and insure to number then accordingly.
Then continue to just cut one strip at a time after the first two
strips have been cut.
Keeping the wallpaper straight
To successfully ensure the first strip is straight use a plumb
line. Start in a corner maybe beside a door as mistakes are less
noticed. Measure and mark the corner to the point on the wall one
half inch narrower than the width of the wallpaper. Use level to
make a plumb line to determine where the paper will connect. The
starting point is along the plumb line.
TIP: A plumb line can be used on all walls for correct accuracy.
You can use a piece of string instead of a level and draw a line
with chalk or pencil. It is easier to follow this when papering.
Fold wallpaper then paste edge in middle.
How to correctly Paste
When using unpasted wallpaper you need to lay the paper
down on an even, clean surface, dip brush or roller into adhesive
and cover evenly. Begin at center of paper and ensure to cover edges.
Fold into two with the ends meeting up.
If you have prepasted wallpaper follow these simple steps.
Fill warm water into tray and then roll paper over tray and let
soak for 30 seconds to minute. Pull out paper of tray then fold
into book like fold. Check for creasing and let the strip absorb
water. The water needs to be changed every 7 strips.
Finally, cut and trim with knife.
How to hang the first piece
Carefully unfold top then place on wall lining the edge up with
line and overlap by 2 inches on the ceiling. Smooth with brush while
holding top up. Brush to edges from center. Remove airpockets, if
a crease occurs remove and rehang. It can be aligned without damaged.
Open end part up and place on wall lining up. Sponge extra paste
on unpasted wallpaper off. Trim edge that overlaps on baseline.
Use toothpicks to mark nail holes when pasting is finished.
